Life Story for Marjorie Gallie

MARJORIE ANN (THEISEN) GALLIE

Age 90, of Fort Washington, MD (formerly of Forest Heights, MD), passed away on February 25, 2017. She is survived by her children David Gallie and wife Doreen, Ann Marie Dixon and husband Joseph, Jillian Gallie and husband Jeffrey Witcosky, and Christine Cacic and husband Michael; grandchildren, Zachary and Joshua Spille, Aleksandra and Arianna Cacic; and great grandchildren Anais Salgado, and Joaquin and Elijah Spille. She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Walter; daughter, Katherine Gallie; and grandson Bob William Gallie.

Marjorie was born on August 12, 1926 in Alton, Illinois to parents Leo William and Theresa Catherine (Show) Theisen. Upon graduating from Alton High School in May, 1944, she entered St. Joseph’s Hospital School of Nursing. She also served in the U.S. Cadet Nurse Corps for 6 months until WWII ended in 1945. In May, 1946, during a school break, Marjorie vacationed in Gulfport, Mississippi and met her future husband, Walter, on a blind date. Walter had re-enlisted in the Navy after WWII and was aboard the USS Requin when his boat was ordered to take part in the Memorial Day celebration in Gulfport. They kept in touch and visited each other when they could. In May, 1947, Marjorie graduated from St. Joseph’s as a Registered Nurse, and in October of that year, Walter was discharged from the Navy. They married in Marjorie’s hometown of Alton on January 24, 1948. The newlyweds then moved to Walter’s hometown of Secaucus, New Jersey, so that Walter could attend New York University’s meteorology program. From 1948 to 1953, Marjorie worked as an Assistant Head Nurse in the maternity and infant wards at Margaret Hague Hospital in Jersey City, taking a 2 year break when she gave birth to their first born. Meanwhile, Walter had enrolled in the Air Force ROTC program and graduated from NYU. In September, 1953, they moved to Manchester, England where Walter had been assigned to the Manston Royal Air Force Station as a weather forecaster. In 1956, Walter was re-assigned to the Air Force Weather Station in Maryland, and they moved back to the United States and lived in Forest Heights for the remainder of his career.

In addition to raising 4 children, Marjorie volunteered for various organizations throughout the years, including the March of Dimes, the American Red Cross’ Bloodmobile and the Diabetic Clinic at Andrews Air Force Base, St. Thomas More Elementary School where she maintained the student’s health records and assisted with the yearly eye exams, and the Girl Scouts where she was a Troop Leader and Cookie Chairman.

Marjorie was a caring and devoted mother who had numerous hobbies and interests including gardening and canning, sewing and quilting, and fishing and crabbing. She was an animal lover, as well.

Family and friends are invited to Marjorie’s Life Celebration on Sunday, March 5 from 4:00 to 6:00 pm at George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 6160 Oxon Hill Road, Oxon Hill, MD. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at St. Columba Catholic Church, 7800 Livingston Rd., Oxon Hill, MD on Monday, March 6, 2017 at 10:30 am. Interment Arlington National Cemetery on Thursday May 4, at 10 am. If you wish to attend the service please meet at the Arlington Administration Building by 9:15 am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Red Cross or a charity of your choice.

Sleep with the angels, Mom.
