Obituary for Anna Howson

Anna Nebe Howson, beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother, passed away peacefully at sunrise on Easter morning in Annapolis, MD, surrounded by her family. She was 92 years old. Anna was born in New Orleans, LA, on October 7, 1924, to the late Irma and Harold Nebe. She married the late William Scott Howson, Jr. in 1943. Anna was preceded in death by her sister Dorothy Nebe Clasen and is survived by a brother, Henry (Emily) Nebe of New Orleans. Anna's roots and robust energy for life and cuisine were New Orleans based and she held strong to her Southern heritage even after she moved to Washington, DC, in 2002 and then to Annapolis to live closer to her children and grandchildren. "Do you know what it means to miss New Orleans?" was a common refrain.

Anna had an insatiable curiosity about people, politics and American history. She had a deep appreciation of nature and found serenity digging in her garden and feeding the birds. She enjoyed watching late-night classic movies and held a special torch for John Wayne.

Anna is survived by two daughters, Susan (Leo) Coco and Sarah (James) McCormick, and two sons, William Scott (Sandra) Howson III and David (Jane) Howson. She was blessed with eight grandchildren, Hannah and Lucy Coco, Eleanor and Leo McCormick, Rebecca Howson-Jacobs and Ben Howson, and Katie and David Howson, as well as three great grandchildren, Beaux Howson, Brendan Dowling and Cora Howson-Jacobs.

A memorial service in celebration of Anna's life will be held at St. Alban's Episcopal Church, 3001 Wisconsin Ave., NW, Washington, DC, on Saturday, April 29, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her name to The National Trust for Historic Preservation ( or the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Foundation (
