LaVerne Ward-White - Obituary

aVerne Ward-White, 77, beloved mother, grandmother, and G-Ma, transitioned to be with the Lord on Tuesday May 3, 2022, while under home care in Clinton, MD, with family at her side. LaVerne was born to the late Eddie Monroe and Erma Lee Ward Rollins, in Washington, D.C. on February 15, 1945. From an early age, she was immersed in the Christian community that would be her lifelong support and commitment to sharing with others the Gospel. For over two decades, LaVerne was a faithful member of St. John’s The Evangelist Catholic Church, in Clinton MD. Where she served as a Eucharistic Minister and always enjoyed singing along with the choir. LaVerne enjoyed celebrating holidays with family and friends. She was known as an extraordinary cook and often prepared meals using fresh ingredients that were grown from her own garden. LaVerne had a knack of taking a little and stretching it into a lot to feed her family and share with others. She also loved to decorate her home with self-made arts and crafts. LaVerne was known for staying up into the wee hours, to sew, knit or crochet clothing and costumes for her children. She was an HGTV enthusiast, and real do-it-yourselfer. LaVerne ambitiously tackled home projects of any size. Undoubtedly, when she made up her mind to do something, she did it and was relentless until her goals were accomplished. LaVerne continuously pursued ways to make life better for herself and her family. From childhood, she learned to overcome obstacles, and never allowed the setbacks to keep her down. LaVerne was a role model, mentor, and counselor to many with some considering her their second mom. LaVerne graduated from Eastern High School in Washington D.C. in 1962. Known for her exceptional eye for detail and being well-organized, in 1965, she passed the United States Civil Service Exam, which would be the start of her illustrious career as a Federal Government employee that spanned more than 42 years. Working with five-star generals and cornels in the U.S. military, LaVerne was a legal assistant in the Staff Judge’s Office in Fort Meade, MD. Later, working on Joint Base Andrews in Camp Springs, MD, LaVerne was an Executive Assistant and eventually retired in 2010, after 32 years of civilian service with the U.S. Department of State, in Washington D.C., as a Foreign Services Allowance and Differential Specialist. LaVerne did not hold any punches. She said exactly what was on her mind. Those who knew and loved her understood that her heart was always in the right place. She loved hard and gave to others her entire life. LaVerne was a nurturer and caregiver. Often, sacrificing her own desires and happiness to ensure the well-being and security of others.
