Alan Dale Duer - Obituary

Alan Dale Duer, (69) went to be with the Lord and Savior on December 31, 2016 due to complications from a 24 year battle with Parkinson’s Disease. Alan was born on September 11, 1947 in Connellsville PA., to Dale and Frances E. Stevenson (nee Grimm) and at the age of two was adopted by Henry J. Duer with his wife Frances. Alan is a graduate of Kenwood High School class of 1965, he enlisted into the Air Force in 1966 was stationed in Germany and was honorably discharged in 1969. He studied at Essex Community College and the University of Baltimore class of 1973 where he earned a BS degree in Law Enforcement. Alan worked for Ocean City Maryland Police for two summers, 1971 and 1973. He moved to Colorado in 1973 and worked for Jefferson County Sheriff’s Dept. in Golden, where he was a Deputy and also assigned to Special Crimes Attack Team. In 1975 was assigned to Jefferson County Narcotics Unit until 1978. From 1978-1980 Alan worked for Arapahoe County Special Crime Attack Team. From 1980-1983 Alan was employed with the Aurora Police Dept., and was assigned to the Vice/Narcotics Unit. From 1984 – 1988, Alan worked for UPS as a driver. He then moved to North Carolina and was employed as a licensed agent for American National Insurance Co. and Life of Virginia Insurance Co. In 1988 they moved back to Maryland and settled in Bel Air, where he went to work as a Nuclear Security Officer at Peach Bottom Atomic Power Plant in Pennsylvania. In 1989 Alan was employed at Constellation Energy (BGE) at Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant as a Nuclear Security Officer and worked his way up to Corporate Security Analyst in Woodlawn MD until 2003 when he was placed on Long Term Medical Leave. Alan was diagnosed in 1994 with Parkinson’s disease. At BGE Alan became A CPP (Certified Protection Professional) where he was Assistant Regional Vice President and was a member of ASIS (American Society for Industrial Security where he was Past Chairman of the Baltimore chapter. He also worked in many states completing security surveys for schools, architects, and businesses as well as teaching classes on disaster response/recovery, workplace violence and security awareness. Alan received many awards during his years at BGE, one of which was the recipient of the 21st Annual Governor’s Award for Crime Prevention, from the Maryland Dept. of Public Safety and Correctional Services, which he was extremely proud of. Alan’s passion was hunting and fishing. He belonged to a hunting club; American Flyway Sportsman’s Club in Cambridge for many years and was the treasurer. He and Judy were very active in Ducks Unlimited, members of the Billy Comegys Queen Anne’s DU chapter. In 2004 Alan married the love of his life Judy (nee Winebrenner, Godman, Davis), and became stepfather to a daughter. Other than his wife Judy, Alan is survived by his parents Henry J. and Frances E. Duer of Bassett VA., his brother Douglass Duer (Patricia), half-sister Dawn King of PA. and Cynthia Stevenson of PA., his daughter Heidi York (Chris), sons Andrew (Melissa), and Adam (Gina) and his stepdaughter Christa Roop (Winebrenner)(Todd). Alan had nine grandchildren, Elijah, Nathaneal, and Noah Duer, Lyla and Grace York, Hunter and Melia Duer, and Makenzie and Madison Roop. Alan is also survived by a cousin Sharon Grimm, niece Amy Grimes (Rob) and great nephew Gage Grimes. A memorial service will be held at Trinity United Methodist Church, 1300 West St., Annapolis, MD. At 11:00 am Saturday January 7, 2017.
