Alex Smith - Obituary

A

lex James Smith of Lothian, Maryland, previously of Lanham, Maryland died peacefully at Anne Arundel Medical Center on Tuesday, September 21, 2010 after a brief illness. He was born on September 10, 1922 in Hooversville, PA to the late Louis and Johanna Soltis Smith. After graduating from high school, Alex served and retired from the US Army. He was in the 101st Airborne and served his country with distinction in three wars, WWII, Korea and Viet Nam. He was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received during WWII. After retiring from the Army in 1963, he worked for the Postal Service until 1986. He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Davidsonville, MD. He enjoyed gardening, landscaping and puttering with mechanical things, particularly automobiles. He was also an avid Washington Redskins fan. Mr. Smith was predeceased by his wife, Mary Bernice Smith in April of 1998 after 50 years of marriage. He is survived by one daughter, Gail M. Smith of Croom, MD and one sister Peggy of Coral Gables, FL. Family and friends are invited to Alex’s Life Celebration on Thursday, September 23 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8p.m. at George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Rd., Edgewater, MD 21037. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Friday, September 24 at 11:00a.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church, 826 W. Central Ave., Davidsonville, MD. Entombment Lakemont Memorial Gardens.
