A

lexander Augustine Fleury, 88, a twenty year resident of Heritage Harbour in Annapolis, MD and previously of Bowie, MD died on Wednesday, March 2, 2011 at his residence. Born May 1, 1922 in Baltimore, MD to the late Paul Aime Fleury, III and Esther McAlister Fleury, he grew up on the family farm, Woodbine, in Upper Falls, MD. During the 1930's and 40's Alex rode in many jousting tournaments in Maryland, Virginia and the surrounding areas as the Knight of Woodbine. He took first many times and was recognized as the Maryland State Jousting Champion three times before the start of World War II. Alex was proudly inducted into the National Jousting Hall of Fame in 2000. Alex enlisted in the Army Air Corp during World War II. He did a three year tour of duty in Europe as a pilot. He was honorably discharged after the War as a First Lieutenant. Alex attended the University of Maryland College Park and graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering in 1951. After graduation, Alex worked for the J.E. Greiner Company as a civil engineer. He worked on such projects as the original span of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and the Garden State Parkway. In 1965, he accepted a job with the Prince George's County Government Department of Public Works and received his professional engineering license. Alex retired from the county in 1988 as Chief of Planning and Programming. Alex and his wife of 58 years, Katherine are members of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Bowie, MD. He enjoyed woodworking and was chairman of the Heritage Harbour Woodshop Committee for many years. He had a passion for Maryland history and the Chesapeake Bay. Fishing and crabbing were a favorite past time especially with his children and grandchildren. Alex enjoyed spending time outdoors gardening, horseback riding and watching Oriole games. In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by two brothers, Paul Aime Fleury IV and Charles McAlister Fleury; and a sister, Mary Virginia Fleury Emory. Alexander is survived by his wife, Katherine Smith Fleury; three daughters, Stephanie Fleury McGuire and her husband Tom of Granby, CT, Mary Jo Fleury Voight and her husband Brad of Bowie, MD and Alexandra Katherine Reynolds and her husband Kevin of Severna Park, MD; two brothers, William E. Fleury of Knoxville, TN and Lewis L. Fleury and his wife Genevieve of Towson, MD; a sister, Esther Fleury Imhoff of Columbus, OH; eight grandchildren, Meagan Katherine McGuire of Newark, DE, Courtney Margaret McGuire of Granby, CT, Christin Voight Fagani and her husband Tony of Crofton, MD, Katherine Voight Nobis and her husband Kerry of Crofton, MD, Emily Madeline Voight of Bowie, MD, and Alexander Patrick Reynolds, Daniel Joseph Reynolds and Michael Thomas Reynolds all of Severna Park, MD, also survived by five great-grandchildren and many, many nieces and nephews. Friends are invited to call at the GEORGE P. KALAS FUNERAL HOME, 2973 Solomons Island Rd., Edgewater, MD on Monday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, March 8 at 11:00am at St. Ignatius Catholic Church, Forest Hill, MD. Interment church cemetery.
