lf B. Alvestad, a resident of Huntingtown, Maryland, died on Wednesday June 9, 2010 at Heart Homes Assisted Living in Annapolis, MD.
He was born October 5, 1919 in Norway, and at age 16 he joined the Norwegian Merchant Marines and became shipwrecked in a North Atlantic Storm in January of 1937. He wrote a detailed account of the sinking and rescue operations on the 20th Anniversary of the event, which was published in Norwegian papers.
Alf worked as a Private Yacht Captain from 1956-1985 in Annapolis.
He was predeceased by his wife Martha Nilson Alvestad, whom he married on June 26, 1943 and who passed away on February 2, 2007. He is survived by his sons, Alf M. Alvestad of Annapolis, MD and Reidar Alvestad of Huntingtown, MD, brother, Leif Alvestad of Norway, grandchildren, Jon-Erik Alvestad, Karen Evans and Rachel Linger, and great-grandchildren Peyton Evans and Kaia Linger.
Friends are invited to Alf's Life Celebration on Thursday June 17, 2010 from 4-7pm at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Rd., Edgewater, Maryland. Interment at Hillcrest Memorial Cemetery at a later date.
