lfred Bergmann, 89, a four year resident of the Heritage Harbour Community and previously of Bay Ridge, Annapolis, MD, died November 29, 2008 of lung cancer at Anne Arundel Medical Center. Born August 2, 1919 in Barmen, Germany, Mr. Bergmann held B.S. and M.B.A. degrees from Rutgers University. He served in the U.S. Navy in WWII aboard the aircraft carriers USS Oriskany and USS Salerno Bay, and was recalled to Reserve Duty service in the Korean War. He started his career in 1939 as a tool and die maker at Picatinny Arsenal, NJ. He joined the U.S. Army Materiel Command (USAMC) in 1952 and he retired in 1975 as Chief of the USAMC Industrial Planning Branch. From 1975-90 he enjoyed a second career as an Associate Professor of Business Management at Prince Georges Community College. Mr. Bergmann had a passionate, lifelong interest in world affairs and he pursued this interest through avid reading, lively discussion, and enrollment in continuing education courses through the Anne Arundel Community College Heritage Harbour extension. Other interests included, in his early years, flying a Piper Cub airplane and, in later years, sailing his sloop with family and friends on the Chesapeake Bay. Mr. Bergmann was first and last a great patriot, waking up every day grateful to be an American. Beloved husband of Gloria R. Bergmann, whom he married September 13, 1942; father of Grant Bergmann of Fairborn, OH, Bradley A. Bergmann of Edgewater, MD, and Janice B. Riddell of Riverside, CT; father-in-law of Victoria Bergmann and Gary Riddell; also survived by three grandchildren, Lance Bergmann and Jennifer and Gregory Riddell. Family and friends are invited to Mr. Bergmann's funeral service on Saturday, December 6, 2008 at 3:00 p.m. at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater, MD. Interment will be held on December 7 at 10:00 a.m. at Lakemont Memorial Gardens, 900 Central Avenue, Davidsonville, MD. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice.
