A

llen Francis “Al Herd, Big Al, Pops” Herdeman, 66 and a resident of Churchton, died December 2 at Calvert Memorial Hospital in Prince Frederick. He had been ill for 25 days and died of Covid-19 after spending 17 days in the hospital. He was born April 8, 1955 in Cheverly to Ernest Duncan and Doris Holland, both of whom are deceased. During his life, Big Al worked for Hostess Cakes, Sunbeam Bread, Schmidts, Atlas Mortgage Company and then Martins Potato Bread. He proudly served his country in the US Marine Corps from 1972 until being honorably discharged in 1976. He was a member of Chesapeake Health and Fitness gym and he enjoyed fishing, playing with his grandchildren and watching and playing sports. Big Al was preceded in death by his son, Eric Herdeman; a brother, Mike Herdeman, and a sister and her husband, Judy and Bruce Polen. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Debbie Herdeman; his children, Kevin (Beckie) Herdeman of Millersville and Alex Herdeman of Churchton; his siblings, Rick (Sherri) Duncan of Pennsylvania and Gail (Vinnie) Calvarese of Southern Maryland; Eric’s fiancée, Diana Dickens; his grandchildren, David “Bubba” Cammarata, Eli Herdeman, Ethan Herdeman, Elsa Herdeman and Nora Herdeman; his sister in law, Linda Herdeman and his nephew Brad Loche. A memorial gathering will be held on Saturday, December 18 from 1-3 pm at Kalas Funeral Home & Crematory, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater, MD.
