A

lvin Edward “Ed” Spencer passed away January 1, 2022 due to complications from a fall. Born October 18, 1929 in Denmark, NY, Ed’s family moved to Ogdensburg, NY where he grew up. After graduating from Ogdensburg Free Academy, where Ed played baseball and the clarinet, he joined the U.S. Navy in 1948. He was stationed at the U.S. Naval Academy’s post graduate school when it was located in Annapolis, MD and served the last 6 months of his naval career aboard the USS Coral Sea. While at the Academy, Ed met the love of his life, Janie Joan McCaskill of Thomasville NC and they married November 24, 1951. Ed attended the University of Maryland where he received a degree in Electronic Engineering and went to work for Alliant Tech (formerly Honeywell) for 30 years. Ed was a 30-year member and past president of Mayo Kiwanis. He loved RV’ing and camping at North Fork Recreation in Front Royal, VA. He attended the former Edgewater Baptist Church and later Heritage Baptist Church. Ed was predeceased by his parents, Royal and Pauline Spencer; a brother, Gerald Spencer; sister, Gertrude Rothenberg and sister-in-law, Patty Maddocks. He is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Janie Joan Spencer of Mayo, MD; three daughters, Debbie Spencer of Pasadena, MD, Stephanie Nelson of Annapolis, MD and Mindy Hubbard of Millersville, MD; a brother, David Spencer of Altoona, FL; two grandchildren, Mark Nelson of Texas and Melissa Benitez of California; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heritage Baptist Church, 1740 Forest Drive, Annapolis, MD 21401 or charity of your choice.
