A

ndrew "Andy, Joe" Gus Pappas, Sr., 81, of Annapolis, MD passed on Saturday, January 23, 2021 due to heart and COVID complications. Born in Washington, D.C. on October 30, 1939 to the late Thomas and Virginia Pappas, Andy graduated from Gonzaga College High School in Washington, DC. He worked for the United States Postal Service and was the owner of RJ Vending. For many years Andy ran fireworks and Christmas tree stands in and around the Washington, DC area. He decorated the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, DC for many years and always had a reserved seat at their Christmas Eve midnight mass. Andy was a lifelong Washington Redskin fan; he, his brother, Gus and brother-in-law, Michael Downey made the famous “Hail to the Over The Hill Gang” sign that they hung at RFK Stadium in 1971. In his retirement, he loved being around family, friends and helping others. He spent many hours at his church, Ss. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church in Annapolis. He also volunteered with the St. Vincent de Paul Society at St. Mary’s Parish in Annapolis and he strongly believed in the Right To Life and looked forward to participating in the March for Life in Washington, DC every year. In addition to his parents, Andy was preceded in death by his son, Thomas John and his sisters, Helen and Calliope. He is survived by his three sons, Andrew Gus, Jr., James (Jan) and William (Donna) Pappas; his brother, Gus (Cynthia) Pappas; his four grandchildren, Steven Friedman and Thomas Pappas (Jim and Jan), Daniel and Matthew Pappas (Bill and Donna), as well as six great-grandchildren, Carmine and Christian (Jim and Jan), Penny, Daphne, Cooper and Piper (Bill and Donna). Friends and family are invited to celebrate Andy's life on Sunday, January 31 from 2 to 5 pm at the Kalas Funeral Home and Crematory, 2973 Solomons Island Rd., Edgewater, MD.
