rnold Hadaway, 66, of Annapolis, passed away on Sunday, January 19, 2014 at the Anne Arundel Medical Center surrounded by his family. He was the youngest son of the late Edward and Barbara Bigelow Hadaway of Betterton. Mr. Hadaway was a 1965 graduate of Chestertown High School and attended Wesley College in Dover, DE before enlisting in the United States Army. He proudly served his country with one tour of duty in Vietnam and received an honorable discharge after serving from 1967 through 1970. Following his discharge, he entered the MD State Police Academy at Pikesville and graduated in June 1971. In June 1972, Tropical Storm Agnes began its devastating sweep through the State of Maryland. In taking quick, courageous action, Trooper Hadaway acted in the highest tradition of the Maryland State Police while saving another human being from certain death at a definite risk to his own life. For this performance, he was awarded the Governor’s Citation, the highest decoration of the Maryland State Police. He also received the Certificate of Merit and Longfellow Trophy for selfless and humane action from the American Red Cross. In 1974, he was selected to serve on the Maryland State Police Legislative Detail in Annapolis. Arnold continued with the MD State Police until 1981 when he retired due to medical reasons. Mr. Hadaway was instrumental in establishing the Veterans of Foreign Wars (V.F.W. Post #10063) and served as Post Quartermaster in 1970–71. In 1975, Mr. Hadaway organized a fundraiser for the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #13 to benefit the families of troopers who had lost their lives in the line of duty. Eddie Feigner, “the King and his Court”, consisting of a four man softball team, competed against the MD State Police. Mr. Hadaway was a past member of PAL – Peninsula Athletic League – where he served ten years as Baseball Commissioner, coach, and on the Board of Directors. His civic organizations included the Annapolis Masonic Lodge #89 and the Independent Order of Odd Fellows Lodge #17. He was a member of the Eastport United Methodist Church. His hobbies included golfing, hunting, fishing, crabbing and shooting pool. Mr. Hadaway is survived by his wife of 45 years, Sue Smith Hadaway,; two sons, Douglas (Jen) and Paul (Stephanie) of Annapolis; one daughter, Chrissy (Mike) of Florida; and seven grandchildren, Trey, Dominic, Anthony, Shelby, Kaitlyn, Jackson and Paxton. Also surviving is one brother, Edward Hadaway, Jr.(Libby) of Smyrna, DE; and nieces and nephews, Eric, Randy and Debbie Hadaway of Baltimore, Terry Rolison and Lisa Pleasanton of Smyrna, DE; Letice DeLoach and Therese Kicklighter of Savannah, GA; a close childhood friend, Donnie Stokes of Worton; and close friends of the family, Sandra Royal and Jeff Pinkney, both of Annapolis. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two brothers, Cawood and Hugh Hadaway. A memorial service for family and friends will be held at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater, MD on Saturday, January 25 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the Eastport United Methodist Church, 926 Bay Ridge Avenue, Annapolis, MD 21403; or the American Cancer Society, 1041 MD Route 3 North, Gambrills, MD 21054.
