Audrey Umpleby - Obituary

A

udrey Dill Umpleby, 90, died peacefully at her home in Annapolis, MD on Tuesday, February 28, 2012. She was born in Baltimore and her friends affectionately referred to her as Dilly. She graduated from Western High School. Her first job in the Women's Travel Bureau at the B&O Railroad opened many opportunities for her including travel and selection as "Charm Girl of the B&O" representing active business girls seeking guidance on etiquette tips including what to say and do and how to dress. After her daughter was born in 1945, she worked as secretary at Campfield Elementary School during the time her daughter attended. Subsequent jobs included executive secretary to senior executives at Black and Decker and Litton Industries. She retired from Westinghouse Electric Company in 1978. Audrey enjoyed working in the garden and loved beautiful flowers. Other favorite past times included bridge, travel, reading and time with her precious poodles. She was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church and loved the Lord. Preceding her in death were her parents Norman Merritt Dill and Maude Strube Dill; her husband, Charles Frederick Umpleby; and her grandson, Bradford Charles Dunlap. She is survived by her daughter, Carol Ann Dunlap and her husband, Steven; her grandson Byron Thomas Dunlap and his wife, Natalia; and her loving and devoted friend, Linda Bezelik. Friends may call at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater, MD 21037 on Monday, March 5 from 10AM until Audrey’s funeral service begins at 11AM. A reception at the funeral home will immediately follow the service. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of the Chesapeake, 445 Defense Highway, Annapolis, MD 21401.
