Barbara J. Byorick - Obituary

t age 66, “Nanners” earned her Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do at Yong Studios in Washington, D.C. That says a lot about how she lived her life! Born November 20, 1938, Barbara Fugel Byorick outlived her parents and three siblings. The youngest and only girl, she was a fierce competitor and never backed down from a challenge. Growing up she competed in Roller Derby and pairs Roller Skating and played every sport she could. Barbara was also a talented artist and crafter… known for her delicate eggshell Christmas ornaments and intricately crocheted afghans. If you were lucky enough to have received one as a gift – you were lucky enough! Barbara was also proud of her work as the Office Manager for OVER 40 YEARS in a Mental Health practice in Washington D.C. She used to joke that the patients came in early to see her! In fact, she never wanted to retire but a bad fall forced her hand. Nanny loved her sweets, especially ice cream which she ate for breakfast, lunch and dinner at times. She enjoyed being a mom, a grandmother, and her best role ever – a Great Grandmother. Her quiet strength, her calming presence and her sense of humor will be missed by all. In addition to her parents and siblings, Barbara was preceded in death by her son-in-law Jeffrey Blauvelt. She is survived by her children: Vicky Shaffer (Rusty), Kim Blauvelt Sodeman (Todd), Edward “David” Byorick, Jr. (Susan), four grandchildren: Erica Walling (Damien), Brooke Widmann (Steve), Zachary Blauvelt (Sarah), Caitlin Johnson (Greg), and seven great grandchildren: Peyton, Teagan, Quinn, Hazel, Jeffrey, Steven and Michael. At Barbara’s request, there will be no service at this time. In lieu of flowers you can honor Barbara by donating to APDA, American Parkinson Disease Association.
