B

arbara Holbrook Meachum passed away at the age of 88 on May 24th, 2023 after years of living with Alzheimer's disease. She was born on February 24th, 1935 in Washington, DC (the oldest of three daughters) to the late Howard Holbrook and Permilla Mouton Holbrook. She grew up in Washington, DC where she attended and graduated high school. After graduating high school, she attended Howard University. Barbara wanted to move away from the city and to the country, so around 1971, Barbara moved to Brandy wine, MD where she had a number of dogs, raised chickens, a few horses, a goat and a pet pig. Later in life, she moved even further out in the country when she moved to Nanjemoy, MD where she could enjoy peace and quiet. Barbara enjoyed gardening and sewing and she also loved to read books. She also enjoyed listening to her favorite radio station - WPFW. Barbara was a free spirit who marched to the beat of her own drummer - she dressed exactly the way she wanted, she styled her hair exactly the way she wanted and she loved wearing military combat boots all year round. Barbara had a great sense of humor and loved to laugh. Along with her parents, she is predeceased by her late husband - David Meachum, her long time companion - Walter King, and her sisters - Zenobia Holbrook and Fernetta Holbrook Duff. She is survived by her daughter Ingrid Meachum-Harper (Girard), daughter Keelie Meachum Taylor (Peter) and her son Antonio King, Sr. (Denise). She is also survived by her grandchildren Kimberly Small (Tony), Robyn Taylor (Xavier), Antonio King, Jr. and Marcus King. She also has seven great grandchildren (Marcus Crawford, Matthew Small, Olivia Small, Naomi Small, Ayrianna King, Antonio King III, Karter King) A memorial gathering will be held on Wednesday, June 14th from 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm at Kalas Funeral Home & Crematory: 6160 Oxon Hill Road, Oxon Hill, MD 20745.
