Barbara L. Merritt - Obituary

arbara Lee Merritt, RDH, a dedicated dental professional, mentor, and leader in the Maryland dental community, passed away on February 7, 2025, at Hospice of the Chesapeake in Pasadena, MD. She was born on March 3, 1953, at Barksdale Air Force Base in Bossier City, Louisiana. Barbara’s passion for dental hygiene was evident throughout her lifelong career. She earned her Associate of Science degree in dental hygiene from Allegany Community College before continuing her education at the University of Maryland at Baltimore Dental School, where she graduated in 1981. She was deeply involved in the Maryland Dental Hygienists’ Association, serving as president from 1994 to 1995, and was a respected leader in her field. Her commitment to excellence extended to the Maryland State Board of Dental Examiners, where she served from 2007 to 2014. Additionally, Barbara was a Clinical Examiner on the Commission on Dental Competency Assessments team from 2007 to 2025, helping shape the next generation of dental professionals For over 25 years, Barbara worked as a dental hygienist for Dr. Joe Milzman in Annapolis, where she formed lasting relationships with her patients. Known for her kindness, professionalism, and dedication to oral health, she brought comfort and confidence to everyone she treated Barbara’s greatest joy, however, was her family and loved ones. She is survived by her devoted husband, David Gaeng; her sister, Peggy Jones; brother-in-law, Randy Jones; nephews Steve Smith and Richard Smith; great nephews Ryan & Charlie; and a lifetime of cherished friends. She also shared a deep love for her cherished Ragdoll cats, Fino and Lulu, who brought her endless joy and companionship. Family and friends are invited to celebrate Barbara’s life on Saturday, March 1, 2025 from 10 am until a memorial service begins at 11 am at the Kalas Funeral Home & Crematory, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater, MD 21037. Barbara L. Merritt’s warmth, dedication, and unwavering commitment to her profession and loved ones will be dearly missed but never forgotten.
