B

arbara Mae Tidwell, age 80, of Ocean View, DE formerly of Clinton, MD passed away surrounded by her loving family on Friday, June 24, 2022 at Beebe Healthcare in Lewes, DE. Barbara was born in Washington, DC on November 8, 1941, daughter of the late James H. Lucas and the late Dorothy Mae (Cryer) Lucas. She retired as a statistical assistant from the National Agricultural Statistics Service in 2004 with a total of 31 years of service with the Federal government. Barbara was a faithful member of St. Barnabas Episcopal Church in Temple Hills, MD where she taught Sunday School from the age of 18 until moving to Ocean View, DE in 2019, eventually becoming the Superintendent of the Sunday School. She was active in the women’s group at the church as well as a member of the Daughters of the King and a past president of the Juanita Chapter at the church. If Barbara wasn’t volunteering her time at the church, you could find her in her garden or flower beds. She was a devoted mother, as she was always volunteering to be the team mom for her son’s sports teams or a chaperone on field trips. Barbara also enjoyed crocheting beautiful blankets, scarfs, baby clothes, and stuffed animals. Eventually, grandchildren drew her and her husband to the beach in Ocean View, DE. She was an ever-loving grandmother always enjoying arts and crafts with her grandchildren, taking them to story time at the public library, playing mini-golf, and taking them for ice cream, not to mention constantly spoiling them as grandparents do. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her youngest brother, John Michael Lucas. Barbara is survived by her loving husband of over 50 years, James H. Tidwell, Jr.; a son, Scott Tidwell and his wife, Colleen of Ocean View, DE; a granddaughter, Greer; two grandsons, Morrison Tidwell and Adler Calhoun; a brother, James H. Lucas, Jr. and his partner Joanne of Waldorf, MD; a niece, Susan Lucas of Waldorf, MD; and, a nephew, John Lucas of Georgetown, SC and their children. The family will be receiving relatives and friends at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church, 5203 St. Barnabas Rd., Temple Hills, MD 20748, on June 30th from 9:00 am to 11:00 am with the funeral service immediately following. Entombment will follow at Fort Lincoln Cemetery in Brentwood, MD followed by a celebration of life back at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions in Barbara’s name to the John Hopkins University Lyme Disease Research Center, https://secure.jhu.edu/form/LymeDisease, or to St. Barnabas Episcopal Church.
