Basil Kalandros - Obituary

asil “Bill/Billy” Louis Kalandros, 82, a resident of Heritage Harbour in Annapolis, MD since 2001 and previously of Gingerville, MD and Hollywood, MD, Silver Spring, MD, Baltimore, MD and Washington, D.C. died on August 4, 2010 at his home after a lengthy illness. Born May 30, 1928 in Baltimore, MD to the late Louis and Kounia Kalandros, he graduated from George Washington University with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1961 and with a Master of Education degree in 1963. Basil served in the United States Navy as a hospital corpsman. Basil taught science and was a school administrator for Montgomery County Public Schools. He was a soccer referee in Montgomery County and made outstanding contributions to soccer in Maryland. He was a member of the Maryland State Soccer Association, where he was a referee, instructor, assessor, delegate, president, state referee and administrator. His hobbies included byzantine chanting, soccer and woodworking. Basil is survived by his wife, Mary H. Kalandros, whom he married on June 30, 1973; his siblings, Konstantine(Barbara) of Colorado Springs, CO and Irene of Silver Spring, MD; his nieces, Tina and Barbara; his nephews, Joseph(Tricia), Michael(Erin) and Stephen(Dianna); his grandniece, Kelly; his grandnephew, Kevin; and his great-grandnieces, Sophia and Isabel. Friends are invited to Basil’s Life Celebration at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater, Maryland on Friday, August 6 from 3- 6pm. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 7 at 10 am at Ss. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church, 2747 Riva Road, Annapolis, MD. Interment St. Demetrios Greek Cemetery.
