ertha Matilda Giles, a 31-year resident of Grasonville, died peacefully on December 21, 2013 of natural causes. She was 91. Born September 18, 1922 in Baltimore, she was employed as a shift manager at Dunkin Donuts in Glen Burnie and W.T. Grant Department Store. Bertha was a member of Living Waters Lutheran Church in Stevensville and a volunteer with the Lutheran Mission Society for over 20 years. She was also a longtime member of the Moose, Elks, V.F.W. and American Legion. She enjoyed bowling, bingo, craft fairs, traveling, the ladies groups on Kent Island, dancing and getting together with family and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Maurice E. Giles, on May 22, 1997; two brothers, William and Melvin Kucherer; and one sister, Emma McCoy. Bertha is survived by her eight children, Dennis M. Giles of Jackson, CA, Dale M. Giles of Summerville, SC, Wanda Shawn of Glen Burnie, Carole Parks of Chester, Debbie Reibly of Bridgetown, Maureen Giles of Stevensville, Darlene Lowe of Crownsville and Valerie Nowottnick of Prince Frederick; and eleven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. Friends are invited to Bertha's Life Celebration at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater on Sunday, December 29 from 2 to 4PM and 6 to 8PM and on Monday, December 30 from 10AM until a funeral service begins at 12PM. Interment in Maryland Veterans Cemetery, Crownsville. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Living Water Lutheran Church, 830 Romancoke Road, Stevensville, MD 21666 or the Grasonville VFD, 4128 Main Street, Grasonville, MD 21638.
