etty Jane (Breakiron) Long, 91, died March 28 in Annapolis, MD. Born May 31, 1921 in Cumberland, MD to the late John and Christine (Thuss) Breakiron, Betty graduated from Ft. Hill High School and Frostburg State Teachers College. She taught at the elementary and middle school levels until receiving her Master's Degree from the University of Maryland and becoming a guidance counselor in the Prince George's County school system. Betty dedicated her life to children and education. She was a life member of the Prince George’s Science Fair Association, worked on the scholarship foundation for Prince George's Co. and was a member of the Washington Academy of Sciences, as well as a judge for many science fairs over the years.
She was preceded in death by her son, James R. Long; sister, Jean Guttierrez and brother, Jack Breakiron.
She is survived by her husband of almost 67 years, Corson W. Long, formerly of Cumberland; daughter, Janet Long Wolfe and her husband, James; grandchildren, Christine, Kimberly and James Wolfe, and Timothy and Nickolas Long; and great grandchildren, Madalyn, Tabitha and Chelsea Long.
Friends are invited to Betty's Life Celebration from 11:00am until her funeral service begins at 1:00pm on Thursday, April 4 at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater, MD . Interment 1:30pm on Friday, April 5 at Hillcrest Cemetery in Cumberland.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-1942.
