he was born Betty Mae Davis on September 16, 1920 to Anthus and Susie Davis in Miller County Georgia. Betty had a gracious, beautiful soul that was quickly recognized by all who met her. Betty “Jewel”, as she decided to call herself, shined brightly; that shine was noticed by Mr. Isiah Eugene Pugh, Sr. of Donalsonville, Georgia. It was, love at first sight, they were married on November 10, 1939. Betty’s thirst for academic achievement could not be quenched. She graduated from Stevens High School in Quincy, Florida in 1940. A military wife and devoted mother never stopped her quest for knowledge. As she travelled the world with her husband, she continued her education as well as ensuring the education of her children. While Isiah was stationed at the Presidio in San Francisco during the Korean Conflict, Betty worked at Lattaman Military Hospital as a hospital volunteer. While stationed at Ft. Monroe, Betty received her Certification in Nursing. In the Panama Canal Zone, with her trade mark, engaging smile, she became an unofficial ambassador of good will to our Central American Friends. She always saw the good in people, and was always there to give a helping hand, when needed. Betty was a devout Christian from an early age. She loved the Lord and enjoyed being in his house. When her husband was assigned to the Washington, D.C. area, the family became members of Paramount Baptist Church in Washington, DC. There she taught Sunday school and served as a Deaconess. Betty was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Betty has now ascended into heaven to join her beloved husband of 48 years and their sons Isah Pugh and Anthus Pugh. She leaves to cherish her memory, two sons: Ronald M. Pugh and Isiah E. Pugh, Jr. (Gene); daughter-in-law: Jean A. Pugh; grandchildren Isiah E. Pugh, III, Robert M. Pugh, Sr., Tiffany D. Pugh, Monique B. Hill and Christopher A. Pugh; brothers and sisters-in-law Vanester Pugh, Catherine Pugh, Willie Fred Pugh, Elizabeth Pugh, Bernice Pugh, and Alice S. Pugh; and a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Family and friends are invited to Betty's Life Celebration on Thursday, February 9 from 10am until time of services at 11am at Paramont Bapist Church, 3924 4th St. S.E., Washington D.C.. Interment will be held at the Pugh Cemetery, Donalsonville, GA. Please sign the guestbook.
