etty Fletcher Ruddle "Fletch," 80, a resident of Edgewater, MD for twenty-six years and previously of Annapolis, MD, died on Wednesday, May 3 at Anne Arundel Medical Center. Born on November 4, 1936, in Elkins, WV to the late Edwin and Virginia Fletcher, Betty was a 1954 graduate of Elkins High School. She attended Marshall University and in 1960 graduated with a B.S. degree from Davis and Elkins College. Betty was an outstanding physical education student in college and was a member and officer of the Phi Mu sorority. She also continued to pursue graduate studies at the University of Maryland in College Park and Towson. Betty worked as a teacher in the Anne Arundel County school system for 38 years. She also was a co-owner of Anchor Aquatics and was a home and business decorating consultant. Betty regularly participated in decorating one of the rooms in the annual Anne Arundel Hospital Snow House. During her lifetime, she was the May Day Queen, the ROTC Queen and was a member of the Queens Court of the West Virginia State Forest Festival. She was also recognized by Maryland state dignitaries, including Gov. Glendenning, for her contributions as an outstanding P.E. teacher. Betty was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and enjoyed interior decorating, drama and helping less gifted students to excel in Physical Education. She is survived by her husband, Joe R. Ruddle, whom she married in 1960; her daughters, JoHannah (Walt) Weldon of Lothian, MD and Jennifer (Chris) Frey of Annapolis, MD; her brother, Thomas Fletcher of West Virginia and her grandchildren, Madison Frey and Reed Weldon. Friends are invited to celebrate Betty's life on Monday, May 8 from 12:30 pm until her funeral service begins at 1:30 pm at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Rd., Edgewater, MD. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association. Condolences may be made by clicking the tab on this page.
