illiam “Bill” Purdy, 89, a lifelong resident of Edgewater, MD, passed away on May 7, 2023. Born in Edgewater on February 26, 1934 to the late Virginia and William Brown Purdy, Bill graduated from Annapolis High School in 1953. He was a retired Anne Arundel County police officer and a self-employed sign painter and dump truck operator. Bill was an avid train collector and a member of the Train Collector’s Association. He was also a member of the former Edgewater United Methodist Church and the Fraternal Order of Police. A prankster at heart, Bill was a friend to many. He loved to read maps and tinker with projects. In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his loving wife of 55 years, Janice, who passed away in 2009. He is survived by two daughters, Janice A. Small and Billie L. (Wayne) Penley, all of Stevensville, MD; two grandchildren, Christopher Penley and Kristina (Jimmy) Gulbin and two great-grandchildren, Emma and Caroline Gulbin. Friends are invited to celebrate Bill’s life with his family from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8PM on Thursday, May 11 at the Kalas Funeral Home & Crematory, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater where Bill’s funeral service will be held at 11 AM on Friday, May 12. Burial will follow at Cedar Bluff Cemetery in Annapolis. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Woodland Beach Volunteer Fire Department, PO Box 236, Edgewater, MD 21037.
