Bruce Lee Moffatt
March 14, 1954 – July 25, 2022

Bruce left us following an exceedingly long and courageous battle against Multiple Myeloma. After diagnosis in 2016, his team of doctors in Annapolis, Baltimore (Johns Hopkins) and Philadelphia (Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania) attacked his condition with every weapon conceivable. One by one, each of those weapons failed. He remained undeterred and, because everyone who treated him eventually grew to love him, he was enrolled in every available clinical trial. The final one, only approved by the FDA this year, was especially brutal. As a result of heroic actions by his team in Philadelphia, Bruce essentially ended up in a clinical trial of Only One. Just Bruce. 

And why would that have happened? Well, Bruce had both a winning personality and a unique approach to life. He began every endeavor with this attitude: ‘I’m Going to Find It’, in the sense that there’s a level of perfection that might be attained. This facet of his personality was evident throughout his life and in sundry areas.

In no particular order, neither chronological nor of importance . . .

Bruce loved Golf.

This is mentioned first because so many of his friends had the pleasure of his company on some course, somewhere. As Bruce was a certified PGA Professional, he was not only a joy to play with, but he was also a terrific coach. Thought experiment: try to remember all those ‘tips’ you were lucky to receive.

He knew the only thing between him and the Tour was the next swing fix. Upon returning from the course: “I think I found it!”

Bruce loved Dogs.

Sandy says he would have owned many more aside from The Girls had she not put her foot down. (Thanks, Sandy.) Most of us can’t imagine sharing a bed with your spouse and two hulking Labs. But that’s what he did every night.

Bruce loved Cars.

Let me count the ways. . . In case you’ve forgotten, he had many car love affairs: Mustang, Porsche, etc. and, ultimately, Ferrari. (He did take a brief break from cars during his illness to segue into an affair with motorcycles, buying and selling three within a mere twelve months.)

Bruce loved Movies.

Scene from Bruce as a child: in front of the TV with a box of Keebler crackers, a stick of butter and the encyclopedia nearby, in case he needed to look up something that had been referenced in the movie he was watching.

Perhaps most of all, Bruce loved Life. His unceasing positivity remains as an inspiration to us all.

So where did this lovely fellow come from?

Bruce was the son of the late Dr. and Mrs. Fred T. Moffatt (Jane Morrison) originally from Shelbyville, KY, then of Annapolis, where Fred was a Baptist minister for years. That would account for his deep faith and willingness to face death squarely. Both his maternal and paternal grandparents had qualities that were evidenced in Bruce as well. The stories of his summers in Mobridge, SD, were many and wonderful.

He is survived by his wife, Sandra Kerr Moffatt; sister Mary Jane Yates of Shelbyville KY; nephew Chip Snipes of Wilson NC; best girls Choco and Latte; and several cousins.

Friends are invited to celebrate Bruce's life at the Kalas Funeral Home & Crematory, 2973 Solomons Island Rd., Edgewater, MD on Friday, August 5 at 11 am.
