arlos d’Arcy McCullough United States Naval Academy Class of 1949 February 4, 1925 – January 17, 2022 Commander Carlos d’Arcy McCullough ‘49 passed away peacefully on January 17, 2022, shortly before his 97th birthday. Born on February 4, 1925, at Georgetown Hospital in Washington DC., he was the oldest of two sons born to Captain Carlos Harry McCullough USMC and Margaret Mary Magee McCullough. After graduation from high school, Carlos studied at the University of Oklahoma. Following his commission as an Ensign, USNR, he reported to Fort Pierce, Florida for Underwater Demolition Training. He resigned his commission on October 24, 1945, and was sworn into the Navy again on October 25, 1945, by the Commandant of Midshipman as a Midshipman, USNA Class of 1949. After graduation, he attended flight training in Pensacola, Florida and was designated a Naval Aviator in 1951. While attached to VF-193, Carlos met and married the love of his life, Doris Charlotte Caroline Sandberg. Together as a Navy family, Carlos and Doris traveled the world with their only child and daughter, Carleen. Carlos, a fighter pilot and Korean War combat veteran, attended the Naval Post-Graduate School in Monterey and received his master’s degree in Aeronautical Engineering from the University of Michigan in1957. Subsequent tours of duty included VAV-33 USS Kearsarge, VA-125, CAG 19 Pacific Fleet, BUPERS, Royal Naval Staff College Greenwich, NATO Oslo, Norway, CINCLANT, and COMSECONDFLT. Carlos retired from the Navy aboard the USS Forrestal CAV-59 in 1971 and became a professor at Tidewater Community College in Virginia Beach, Virginia where he taught for many years. Carlos was an accomplished golfer with more than one hole in one to his credit, a clever bridge partner, an avid reader of history, and a true gentleman. He was loved as Grandpa Carlos by his granddaughter, Mary Charlotte Doherty Jones, and grandson Sean Patrick Doherty. He was a loving great-grandfather to Charlie, Teddy, Jamie, and Rory. A recent resident of Annapolis, Carlos is survived by his daughter, Carleen Charlotte McCullough Doherty (John USNA’75) of Annapolis, MD, his brother, David Underwood McCullough (Darlene) of Lewiston, Idaho, granddaughter Mary Charlotte Jones (Brent) of Villanova, PA, grandson Sean Patrick Doherty (Katia) of Havertown, PA, grandchildren Charles Stephen Jones, Theodore d’Arcy Jones, James Thomas Doherty, and Rory Patrick Doherty, Martin Lientz McCullough USNA ’58 (Adrienne), Donna McCullough, and many other family members and friends who he loved. Carlos was predeceased by his wife, Doris Charlotte McCullough, Montgomery Lientz McCullough USNA ’30 and Michael Stuart McCullough’60. His was a life well-lived. Cheers to greatest generation!
