alvert Hall Hardesty, 94, a 28-year resident of Annapolis and previously of Brandywine, died March 27 at Anne Arundel Medical Center. He was born January 8, 1918 in Friendship to the late William Marvin and Edith Helen Hardesty. Calvert served in the U.S. Army as a Master Sergeant in the Medical Air Evacuation Squadron and participated in evacuating wounded to the United States following the invasion of Normandy. During his military service, he was awarded the American Campaign, Bronze Air, Liberte, and Good Conduct medals and the Medal of the Jubilee of Liberty.
Calvert was the owner of several grocery stores throughout Maryland and the District of Columbia. The last store, Hardesty’s Service Market, was located at 1504 E. Capital Street in Washington. He was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Reformation and loved to bowl and golf. He was very proud of his two holes-in-one.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Margaret Hardesty, who died in 2002. He is survived by one son, Russell Hardesty of Florida; two daughters, Sandra (Lee) Burch of Harwood and Judy (Charles) Repass of LaPlata; five grandsons, Michael Burch of Germantown, Russell Andrew Gellerson of FL, Shane Wohl of Harwood, Jason Hardesty of Florida, Jesse Gellerson of Cary, NC; one granddaughter, Heather Crespo of Aiken, SC; and one great-granddaughter, Alea Crespo.
Friends are invited to Calvert’s Life Celebration on Friday, March 30, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater where Calvert’s funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 31 at 12:30 p.m. Interment Fort Lincoln Cemetery.
