C

armen Tuya Wilbur, 87, of Columbia, MD and previously of Bethesda, passed away on Friday, January 15, 2016. Born on August 10, 1928 in Maryland to the late Manuel and Eugenia Tuya, Carmen attended Catherman's Business School in Cumberland, MD after graduating from Bruce High School in Western Port, MD. At the age of 79, she graduated from the University of Maryland with a Bachelor of Science degree. Carmen had a long career with the U. S. Department of State working in Morocco, Liberia and Peru. She also worked for the U.S. Department of Commerce. After retirement, Carmen used her bilingual abilities to work with ESOL students in Gaithersburg and assisted her husband, Carl, in prison ministry through their church, St. Jane de Chantal in Bethesda. Carmen was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Wilbur and her sister, Gloria. She is survived by her son, Luke Wilbur of Columbia, her two grandchildren, Luke A. Wilbur, Jr. and Lyra Marin Wilbur of Ashton and her sister, Marina and her husband, Robert Beasley of Davidsonville. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Monday, February 1 at 10 am at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, 515 Loch Haven Road, Edgewater, MD, with internment to follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Silver Spring, MD. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 7500 Greenway Center Drive, Suite 300, Greenbelt, MD 20770 or the National Parkinson's Foundation, 200 S.E. 1st Street, Suite 800, Miami, FL 33131.
