arol P. Fohner, 62, of Crofton, MD, whose career with the Prince George's County Health Department spanned more than 35 years, died peacefully on Friday, April 16, 2010 at Anne Arundel Medical Center, concluding a courageous 3-year battle with metastatic breast cancer. She was born Carol Ann Pyle on December 10, 1947 at the old Columbia Hospital for Women in Washington, DC, a fourth-generation native of the city. She was a 1969 home economics graduate of the University of Maryland, College Park. She joined the Health Department immediately upon graduation, inspecting restaurants and other food-handling establishments. She interrupted her career briefly following the birth of her twins in 1978, but resumed her service a few years later, loyally serving until she retired in February of this year for health reasons.
She is survived by her children: Bryan C. Smeby of Crofton and Kristen L. Smeby (Sebastian Jaramillo) of Atlanta, GA; her twin sister, Nancy (Lyle) Minter of Fairfax, VA; and her younger sisters: Janice (Stephen) Hansman of Arnold, MD, Marilyn Luke-Hutson of Germantown, MD, and Barbara (David) Bolvin of Olney, MD. She is also survived by one granddaughter, Taylor Elise Smeby, and a niece, four nephews and many other family members and friends.
Friends are invited to Carol's Life Celebration on Tuesday, April 20, at 6 p.m. followed by a Memorial Gathering at the GEORGE P. KALAS FUNERAL HOME, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater, MD.
