C

arolyn Costa, 91, a 23-year resident of Annapolis and formerly of Beltsville, died December 21 following a brief illness. Born on May 15, 1922 in Washington, DC to the late Albert and Francesca Colabucci, Carolyn graduated from high school and worked as a secretary at the U.S. Department of Agriculture, retiring at the age of 75. After retirement, she became a substitute teacher for the Prince George’s County Board of Education, working at the Riverdale and Cool Spring Elementary Schools. In addition to her teaching role, Carolyn enjoyed reading, knitting and playing cards. She was a 23-year member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church in Crofton, and a member of the Annapolis Mall Walkers Club and Woman’s Club of Heritage Harbor. She was also a 27-year breast cancer survivor. Carolyn was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, John D. Costa, who died in 2006 and a brother, Anthony Colabucci. She is survived by six children, 14 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and two sisters, Rose Sullivan of Stevens Point, WI and Adrienne Hope of Montgomery Village. Friends are invited to Carolyn’s Life Celebration from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, December 26 at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 1 p.m. on Friday, December 27 at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 1800 Seton Drive, Crofton. Interment Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Crownsville. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or American Heart Association.
