Carolyn Swatta - Obituary

C

arolyn was born during a Plattsburgh, NY blizzard on February 21, 1922. The youngest daughter of Max and Alice Dague Schilling, she grew up with her older brother John and sister Mina on the banks of Lake Champlain. In 1946 she met and married a young Army engineer, Lt. Colonel Frank Swatta, and began a military wife life that took them to army posts assignments in Japan, Okinawa, Germany and all over the United States. They had three children and many adventures as they lived 52 years of married life. Frank passed away on Sept. 11, 2000. Carolyn was an avid athlete in her younger days and enjoyed playing basketball and tennis. In later life, she picked up golf and became a decent handicapper. She enjoyed sports on TV and was a steady follower of the University of Maryland basketball team, profession tennis and the Redskins; supporting the teams when they won and cursing them when they didn’t. At 92, Carolyn passed away quite peacefully on 2 March 2014, with her extended family. Carolyn is survived by her three children; Mark Swatta and his daughter Courtney; Candy and her husband Bob Ray; and Chris and his wife Marsha and children Chip and Robert; her nephews and nieces, John, Carl and Carol Schilling and Cathy Putnick , and her many friends especially the wonderful Golf Girls and Gambling Buddies. Carolyn’s stunning blue eyes, sense of humor and indomitable spirit will be missed. And she will be loved and remembered every day.
