arrie H. Pulley was the seventh child born to Clem Edward and Zulean Golden Turner Ross. She was born on June 26, 1927 and departed this life on Monday, September 30, 2019. Carrie was raised in Loudon County, Virginia where she met and later married Wilmer Thomas (deceased) on February 25, 1948. Of this union, three daughters and one son were born. Carrie and Wilmer lived several years on the eastern shore of Maryland before moving to Washington, DC. Carrie was employed at the National Children’s Center as Staff Supervisor until her retirement in 1993. Carrie and Wilmer dissolved their union after twenty-five years of marriage. On March 14, 1975, Carrie married the late Alfred W. Pulley, Sr. As a result of this marriage, she became stepmother to Alfred’s five children. During her lifetime, Carrie became a licensed real estate agent in the state of Maryland. She was a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary and enjoyed boating, crabbing and fishing. Carrie was also a member of the Eastern Star, Miriam Chapter No. 4. She and three of her sisters were members of the Virginia State Society. She was very close with her sisters and shared a unique relationship with each one of them. The book “Sister Friends” by Michelle V. Agins and Julia Chance detailed their monthly gathering that was established as a tradition known as Sisters Day – Ross Family Style. The Ross Girls as they were known spent many hours eating, laughing, gossiping and reminiscing. As quoted by Carrie in the book “After we lost three sisters and four brothers, we decided to do this to stay close.” Carrie was a long-time member of the Hillcrest Baptist Church where she sang in the choir. She was a member of the Senior Group and developed lasting friendships throughout the church. She attended faithfully until her illness. Carrie loved to cook and bake. The family enjoyed her cooking and looked forward to the caramel cakes she made for family gatherings. Carrie leaves to mourn her children, Carol Watkins, Gloria Thompson, Terry (Michael) Thomas-Whetstone, and W. Greerlin “Greer” Thomas, Diane Burrell, Mary (John) DeSalvo, Anne (Joseph) Mazzola, Luther “Pete” Pulley; grandchildren, Dana (Anthony), Damon (Robin), Dwayne, Greerlin, Darren, Timothy, Shauntee; John (Gorette), Thomas, Jacqueline (Raymond), Alexandra, Joseph, Seth (Chansoria), Tammy, Marve (Nique), and Kayla; 19 great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild; three sisters, Gloria Walker, Dorothy Jackson, and Mary Settle; two brothers James (Brenda) Anderson and Paul (Annette) Moore; sisters-in-law Sally Pulley and Alma (Theophilus) Stokes; nieces, nephews, and a host of other family and friends. A graveside service will held on Tuesday, December 10, 2019 at 2 p.m. at Arlington National Cemetery. Please arrive at the Administration Building at 1:15 p.m. with one's own transportation.
