Catherine Barge Powell, 85, a four-month resident of Assisted Living Well Compassionate Care in Millersville, formerly of Edgewater, died of pneumonia June 23 after a brief illness.
Mrs. Powell was born Nov. 23, 1921, in Macon, Ga., where she graduated from Miller High School. She retired in 1993 from the Naval Academy, where she was a supervisor of the data processing and computer operations department. She was featured in The Evening Capital on May 11, 1973, in "The Working Woman" column highlighting her job at the academy.
Her interests included tennis, boating, golf, softball and basketball.
Surviving are three daughters, Connie North of Edgewater, Karen Lechthaler of Frederick and Kimberly Brand of Arnold; one brother, Bill Barge of Jacksonville, Fla.; one sister, Susan Barge Powell of Macon; Four grandchildren, Tracy North Supcoe, Kenny, Cassie and John Brand and one great-grandson Bobby Supcoe. She was divorced in 1973 from Kenneth Powell, and was the sister of the late John Barge.
A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. tomorrow at Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater. Burial is private.
