harles T."Charlie" Brewer, 85, a lifelong resident of Maryland, passed away on August 28, 2017 at his home in Edgewater. Born on May 31, 1932 in Washington, DC, Charlie grew up in Bryantown, MD and attended Leonard Hall Naval Academy where he graduated in 1946 with the rank of Captain. He attended Georgetown University and joined the U.S. Navy, retiring in 1992 as a Master Chief after 42 years continuous service. On his birthday in 1952, he married the love of his life, Betty Jane Yetton. Several years later, they settled in Edgewater to raise their family.
Charlie was a well-known business and community leader and consumer advocate. He was involved with many community organizations during his lifetime but the South River Ruritan Club and the Navy Reserves were his passion.
Charlie is survived by his wife, Betty Jane; six of their seven children and spouses, Charles (Kathy), Cindy, Cherie Hall (Leonard), Carl (Gladys), Christie Bowie (David) and Carol Cox (Steve), 26 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. His youngest son, Clint, died in 1992.
Friends are invited to celebrate Charlie's life from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, August 31 at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, September 1 at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church in West River, MD followed by a reception and burial at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bryantown MD.
