Charles Mahlon Hopkins of Glenn Dale, MD went home to be with his Lord on Saturday, December 12, 2020.  He was born June 10, 1932 in Middlesex, NC to the late Charles Walter and Odie Brantley Hopkins.

He began his career with the Federal Government, Washington, DC, in 1950, and worked for the Department of Navy, Department of Agriculture, and Department of Interior, until retiring in 2001.  His career in the computer field began with one of the first Univac computers at the Department of Agriculture, moved on to key punch cards, and we recall his delight with the first disc drives installed, concluding with systems management.  He was awarded a Presidential Citation in 1964 from President Lyndon B. Johnson for outstanding contributions to improving government operations.

He served as a deacon at National Church of God and Riverdale Baptist Church.  His favorite position was serving as a greeter at Grace Baptist Church, welcoming all, but especially the children arriving at his door.

He was preceded in death by his sisters, Lottie Brantley, Dorothy Sanders and Mavis Hopkins; brothers, Oliver, Doliver, Flavius, Tommy, Charles Walter, Jr., Homer and Revel Hopkins.

He is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 64 years, Bernice Edwards Hopkins; children, John Michael Hopkins of Baltimore, MD, Daryl Hopkins and wife Tammy of Middlesex, NC, Deborah Miller and husband Ray of Crownsville, MD, grandchildren; Kimberly (Trey) Wilkins, Olivia (Logan) Craft, Victoria Miller, Valerie (Trent) Murray,  Charles (Victoria) Hopkins; step-grandchildren, Mary (Phillip) Lyon, Ginger (Sterling) Mull, and Jamie (Tim) Langley, one great grand-daughter, Ella Rose Wilkins, ten step great grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews, friends and neighbors.

A celebration of his life will be held at 11 am, Saturday, December 19, 2020 at MidPoint Church, 5407 South NC-231, Middlesex, North Carolina, 27557.  Visitation from 10:00 am until time of service.  Burial to follow in the church cemetery. Masks and physical distancing required.
