Charles W. Johnson - Obituary

C

harles William Johnson, Jr., son of the late Charles W. Sr. and Leola F. Johnson was born February 23, 1943, in Washington, DC; and on Monday, March 1, 2021, he quietly entered into eternal rest. Charles Jr. was lovingly nicknamed “Buddy” by his father and was baptized at an early age at The Way of the Cross Church of Christ in Washington, DC. He attended DC Public Schools and immediately following high school he enlisted into the U.S. Army where he was honorably discharged after 10 years of service. After military service, he worked at The Washington Post as a newspaper distributor and the Washington Metropolitan Police Department as a police officer. He relocated to Springfield, MA, where he worked for Digital Computer Electronics Company. Upon returning to Washington, D.C. he united with Corinthian Baptist Church on 5th & I Street, NW. He worked at the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) in various positions until he retired as a Supervisor of ATC. He spent his retirement years in Rocky Mount, NC, and united with Word Tabernacle Church. He was married to Lillian Johnson and from that union were three children. Buddy later met and married his current wife, Ruth Jones, of 46 years until his death. Buddy, as his family and friends called him, was a kind, loyal, dependable, caring, and humble person. He enjoyed doing fun things with his family, including fishing, playing bid whist, and orchestrating Easter egg hunts every year. He was loved and admired by all who knew him. He leaves to mourn his loss, a devoted wife, Ruth, and his beloved sister, Beverly; five children; Willard “Butch” (Julie), Deidre “Dee Dee”, David, Sharea, and Cynthia; grandchildren MeChale (Demetrius), Crystal (Evan), Delonte, Denitra, Dejourna, Mikal, Seth, David Jr., Evan, Valery, Brittany, Brianna, Sydni, Brandon, and Jadon; two sisters-in-law, Bonnie and Dorothy (Dottie); and a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. The visitation, funeral services and interment for Mr. Johnson are private.
