harles Lander Lay, 84, a 50-year resident of Glenn Dale and previously of Edgewater, MD, passed away on April 28, 2017. Born on May 24, 1932 in Washington, DC, Charles graduated from Eastern High School. After serving in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War, he continued his education at the IBEW Local #26 JATC and became a licensed electrician. Charles continued his membership with the IBEW Local #26 throughout his entire 37-year career. He was also a member of Grace Baptist Church in Bowie and the Greenbelt American Legion. In his spare time, Charles enjoyed golfing.
Charles was preceded in death by his loving wife of 59 years, Betty Jean Lay. He is survived by a son, Mark Lay of Churchton, MD; three daughters, Laurie Ann Lay of Bowie, MD, Brenda Lay Sirois of Edgewater, and Kimberly Lay of Germantown, MD; two brothers, Steve Lay of North Carolina and Walt (Mickey) McCarthy of West Virginia; five sisters, Carol Redmond of Lanham, MD, Janice Slaughter and Joyce Mason both of Odenton, MD, and Diane Sensintaffar and Nancy Ryder both of Rolla, MO; four grandsons, John Garton, Jason and Ryan Lay, and Stephen Sirois; two granddaughters, Ashley Barrett and Maggie Lay; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Friends are invited to celebrate Charles’ life with his family from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, May 3 at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater where a memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, May 4. Inurnment will follow immediately afterward at the Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Crownsville.
