CHARLES SCOTT VOGAN JR ‘72

Captain Charles S. Vogan, Jr, USN (Ret) passed away on 20 March 2022 at home in Edgewater, MD, after a courageous battle with cancer.  
“Chuck” was born on 23 August 1950 in Bryn Mawr, PA, to the late Charles S. Vogan Sr and Mary Ann Vogan.  After graduating from Conestoga High School, where he played quarterback and was the Student Council President, Chuck arrived in Annapolis with the class of 1972.  His 10th Company mates knew him as a gentleman and a great friend.  He and his family generously hosted the 10th company at home for many a post-game Army-Navy Party.

Chuck had a very successful career as a Surface Warfare Officer with a wide range of assignments at sea and ashore.  His dedication to his craft and unrivaled leadership skills were noted and appreciated at every level of his career.  He was the consummate professional and a mentor to junior officers and enlisted Sailors alike.  His success was mirrored in the stellar record of his first command as the Commissioning Commanding Officer of USS Ingraham (FFG-61).  He was most proud of the honor of taking command of the USS Leyte Gulf (CG-55).  He served on the staffs of the Commander Sixth Fleet, Commander Second Fleet, and Commander U.S. Atlantic Fleet.  His final contribution to the Navy and our nation was as the Director, Theater Air Warfare, Surface Warfare Division (N865) in the Office of the CNO.

In February 1999, Chuck transitioned to civilian employment as a consultant to the U.S. Navy.  He was a Project Management Professional and was a graduate of Maryland’s “Leadership Anne Arundel” program.  Chuck was a regular at Mass in the Academy Chapel and enjoyed Navy football games as a long-time season ticket holder.  The best part was always the tailgates.  

He met Linda in T-court his first-class year and never looked back.  They were married after his first deployment and only then did Linda realize that deployments were not a one-time occasion.  Their Navy life allowed them to live in some of the most beautiful locations in this country and a special tour in Italy. They chose to settle in Annapolis, with family near and a nod to where they met. 
In addition to his partner and best friend, Linda, Chuck is survived by their two children Meagan O’Donnell (Matt) and Matthew (Amanda); their three grandchildren Dean, Marin, and Reed; his brothers John and David (Lori); and his sisters Mary Voganand Patricia Birnbaum (Rae). 

Mass of Christian Burial and inurnment will be held at the Academy Chapel on 22 August 2022, at 2 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital (stjude.org) or the Anne Arundel Food Bank (aafoodbank.org).
