r. Claude J. Shiflet, Jr. (Jack) passed away on May 11, 2019 at the age of 97 in Annapolis, MD. He was born to the late Claude Jackson Shiflet and Elise Ryals Shiflet on September 15th, 1921 in Wilmington, VA. Claude grew up in Washington, DC graduating from Roosevelt High School in 1939. He married Margaret L. Scott in 1944 while attending Georgetown University School of Dentistry and then graduated in 1946. After graduation, he was commissioned in the Army Dental Corps, served 2 years at Fort Clayton General Hospital in the Canal Zone and was discharged in 1948 as an Army Captain. Claude practiced dentistry for 50 years in Washington DC and retired in 1996. He was active in the local civic associations and past President of the Sumner Citizens Association and Vice President of the Westmoreland Citizens Association. Claude and Margaret resided in Bethesda, MD for 52 years and moved in 2002 to Heritage Harbor in Annapolis, MD. Claude has been a member of the 6th Presbyterian Church in Washington, DC since 1946, serving as a Deacon and Elder. He was a life member of the DC Dental Society and belonged to the Washington Dental Study Club and the Dental Progress Study Club. Claude loved life and enjoyed boating, fishing, snow skiing, motorcycles and even built and flew his own ultra-light aircraft. He remained active even at 97, riding his 10-speed bike every day to “check on the neighbors”. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Margaret and his 2 sisters Francis Peterson and Louise Wright. He leaves behind his 2 children Dr. Dennis Shiflet of Bethesda, MD and Mrs. Claudia Edgar of Davidsonville, MD; 5 grandchildren-Michael, Brian, Jonathan, and Christopher Edgar and Jennifer Shiflet; and 2 great grandsons-Logan and Jackson Edgar. A Celebration of Claude's Life will be held at Kalas Funeral Home & Crematory, 2973 Solomons Island Rd., Edgewater, MD on Friday, May 17, 2019, from 10 am until his funeral service begins at 11 am.
