Dan M. Spain, Jr. - Obituary

an Mitchell Spain, Jr., 82, passed away January 30, 2018, surrounded by his wife, children, and animals. He was born in Belhaven, NC on December 28, 1935, to the late Dan Mitchell and Mabel Earl Spain, Dan earned a bachelor’s degree from East Carolina University and a Master’s of Public Health degree from the University of North Carolina. He served as a cryptographer for the U.S. Army. Dan completed his remarkable 28 years of public service as Public Health Advisor, Director of Program Development, at the National Center for Health Services Research in 1986. Dan lived in Arnold, MD and continued to work in real estate and home appraisals. When he really retired, Dan enjoyed fishing, crabbing and exploring every nook and cranny of the Chesapeake Bay by boat. He loved to laugh and entertain, garden, travel the world, read and take care of all living things - small and large - as well as assist his wife, Chris, in her charitable works and animal rescues. He leaves a big hole on this earth. Dan is survived by his loving wife, Chris; son, Kevin Lancaster (Joy); daughter, Dana Katherine, grandchildren; Haley and Riley; and his siblings, Adolphus Spain (Loyd Johnson), Linda Bartlett (Ralph), and Hilda Spain. Friends are invited to visit with Dan’s family from 10 AM until a celebration of Dan’s life, with a nondenominational service, begins at 11 AM on Monday, February 12 at George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Rd., Edgewater, MD. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Assistance League of the Chesapeake, Kids in Need Program, P.O.
