D

aniel Jonathan “Dan” Mann, a 27-year resident of Lothian and previously of Forestville, MD, passed away peacefully in his sleep on July 8, 2022. He was 94 years old. Born on May 2, 1928 in Orange, VA to the late Gayle and Jenney Mann, Dan developed an interest in aviation in his teens. He began working at Bowling Air Force Base at the age of 16. In 1945, Dan enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was assigned to the Army Air Corps as a flight engineer, rising to the rank of corporal. After his discharge from active duty, Dan continued serving his country in the Navy Reserves for 30 years. In addition to his military service, he enjoyed a career as an HVAC mechanic. Dan was a “Jack of all Trades” and was always busy and on the go. He enjoyed working on cars, building trailers, and was an active churchgoer. A talented guitarist, he enjoyed playing music at Happy Harbor and the barn. Dan was a friend to many and especially enjoyed the friends he met daily for morning coffee at Dunkin Donuts. In addition to his parents, Dan was preceded in death by his loving wife, Danelia Nelly Elizondo Mann who passed away in 1974; his twin sister, Dottie Flaherty; a brother, Gayle “GS” Spencer Mann Jr.; and another sister, Faye MacInstosh. He is survived by two daughters, Linda Gail Mann Newitt and her husband, Zachary of Tracys Landing, MD and Cynthia Cummings of Frederick, MD; one granddaughter, Josslin Newitt Twitty and her husband, Aaron of Lothian, MD; and three great-grandchildren. Friends are invited to visit with Dan’s family from 3 to 6 p.m. on Monday, July 18 at the Kalas Funeral Home & Crematory, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater, MD. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, July 20 at the Rhoadesville Baptist Church, 26042 Lafayette Drive, Rhoadesville, VA 22542 followed by burial in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Rhoadesville Baptist Church at the address above. Online condolences may be offered using the Memories tab on the right side of this page.
