D

efrona “Dee” Smith, who spent forty-one years as owner of the Edgewater Hair Salon, died July 1 at her home of sixty years in Edgewater Beach. She was 96. In the early 1950’s Dee and Irv met in Washington, D.C. while learning to ballroom dance. In 1952 Dee Lucado married F. Irvin Smith and they moved to Edgewater Beach. Irvin died in 2002 after more than fifty years of marriage. In 1956 Dee opened the Edgewater Beauty Salon and was a successful businesswoman her entire life. She worked into her 70’s. Dee was always known to be beautifully well dressed, perfectly coiffed- and always the lady. Dee was born in Appomattox, Virginia, next to the youngest of 13 children. She was preceded in death by all her siblings, including brother, Gilbert who lived to be 103 and sister, Pauline who lived to be 97. She is survived by her loving daughter, Diane Lucado and her husband, Gregory Stanley and loving daughter, Patricia Kogok whose husband Henry Kogok died in 2006 after twenty seven years together. Friends are invited to Dee’s Life Celebration on Friday from 7:00 to 9:00pm at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Rd., Edgewater, MD where funeral service will be held on Saturday, July 6 at 10:00am. Entombment Hillcrest Cemetery in Annapolis, MD.
