D

erek Wayne Moten (Buddy) was born on June 27, 1956, at 12:47 a.m. in Washington D.C. at District of Columbia General Hospital to Elmer Theodore Moten Jr. and Elinor Josephine Moten (Amis). Derek (Buddy) graduated from Theodore Roosevelt High School. Derek (Buddy) held a multitude of positions early on he worked at a local gas station pumping gas and working on cars, but his favorite job was working at Rock Creek Park Horse Stables, handling the horses and maintaining the stables. He also worked for D.C Metro and Montgomery County Ride-On as a bus driver. Derek (Buddy) was always a big guy, but to those who really knew him, he was a big teddy bear. He had a great sense of humor, and he would go out his way to make people laugh and smile by doing just about anything to make that happen from funny faces, cartoon voices, and pop locking. His favorite comedy show was The Three Stooges, and he likened himself to Curly. He loved two extraordinary women in his life, his beautiful mother and our beloved Nana, his grandmother. He adored kids. We are sad he didn't have any of his own, but his many dogs were his kids, and he truly loved them all. He was preceded in death by his Father: Elmer Theodore Moten Jr.. Grandmother: Constance Dean Houser (Nana). Brother: Darryl Theodore Moten (Bedo), Brother-In-Law: James Edmondson Whitley Jr., Dogs: Buddy & Rascal. He is survived by his Mother: Elinor Josephine Moten. Sisters: Wendy Anita Whitley, Toni Lynn Coates (Joseph Jr.), Barbara Denise Williams (Reginald). Uncle: Everett Houser. Cousins: Michelle Moten, Alora Commodore, Charles Amis, Carla Vaughn, John Cosley, Collin Gray, Bruce Gray, and Eddie. Nieces & Nephews: Tessa Elinor Whitley-Lyles (Tyrone), James Edmondson Whitley III (Danielle), Nicole Lynn Coates-Terry (James), Joseph Thomas Coates III (Samantha), Robert Williams, and Christina Williams. Also, 22, great-nieces and great-nephews and best friends: Ralph Maunder (Hazel), Elizabeth Van Deerlin, Curly Proctor, Gary Evell, and Sandy Barnes. Derek (Buddy) will live in the hearts and minds of so many people. He is gone to rest in paradise but never forgotten. Relatives and friends are invited to Derek's Life Celebration on Thursday, December 5, 2024 at 12 P.M. at the KALAS FUNERAL HOME & CREMTORY, 6160 Oxon Hill Road, Oxon Hill, MD, 20745.
