Desmond Theophilus Pollard - Obituary

Desmond Theophilus Pollard also known as Swapo, DT, Soldier, 68, of Upper Marlboro, MD, passed away on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born on December 21, 1957, in Scarborough, Tobago, to Theophilus Pollard and Eldica Pollard. Desmond was the first son of Theophilus and a beloved brother to six brothers and one sister. He grew up in a home centered on faith, learning, and family, which shaped his character, values, and pursuits throughout his life. From a young age, Desmond was known for his quick mind, deep curiosity, informed wit, and quiet kindness. This led him to join the army in his birth country of Trinidad and Tobago where he served for 20 years, retiring with a rank of Corporal because of his perseverance, leadership, and commitment to doing good. He was passionate about his family which led him to leave his land of birth to pursue a better life in America for his wife and two children, forsaking all he had already accomplished. His dedication to his family was shown when he became a coach in track and field simply because his children showed interest and promise in the sport. He was an active father to his two children, never missing a track meet or football game even when his kids, now grown, were competing in college. Desmond’s love for the Lord was exemplified in the way he lived. His Faith in Jesus Christ defined his purpose for living and he instilled those values to his family. He served in church from an adolescent, singing in the Boys Brigade, to serving as an usher and a Deacon in his adulthood. His calling was to serve in the house of the Lord and he did, faithfully until he was no longer able. Throughout his life, he found strength in the gospel and maintained a personal devotion that was steady, humble, and sincere. He held various callings and was always willing to serve without seeking attention or praise. Desmond worked in a variety of fields during his lifetime, including real estate, Health information management, and the military. He brought excellence and integrity to every endeavor. Friends and family relied on his insights and trusted his judgment. Despite his health challenges, Desmond remained resilient, independent, and grateful. He found joy in meaningful conversation, reading, traveling, and staying connected to family and friends. Desmond was both meticulous and spontaneous, thoughtful and principled. He had exceptional taste and never wasted time or money on anything low quality. He was present for and often the heart of our most cherished memories, and he will be deeply missed in all the milestones to come. Desmond is survived by his devoted wife of 40 years Marlene Pollard; his two children: Kafi Pollard, Kerry Pollard, and his two brothers: Jeffrey Pollard of Buccoo, Tobago; Pete Pollard of Buccoo, Tobago.He is also survived by twenty nieces and nephews who adored him. He was preceded in death by his father, Theophilus Pollard; his mother Eldica Pollard; his brother Luther Skeete; his sister Clothilda Cunningham; his brother Roy Skeete; his brother George Peters; and his brother John Pollard. Well done Soldier, you will be forever missed!
