Donald B. McGlew - Obituary

onald Bernard McGlew of Annapolis, MD passed away June 4, 2018 at his house in Epping Forest, Annapolis, after a seven-year battle against cancer. He was seventy years old. Don leaves behind his greatly beloved wife Kathleen McGlew and his step-daughter Michelle Lonchar of Annapolis. He was preceded in death by his step-daughters Kara and Jennifer Hamilton. Don also leaves behind four grandchildren: Marek and Xander Lonchar of Annapolis and Petra and Nicholas Novotny of Northern CA. A beloved and devoted husband, father, grandfather, friend, educator and coach, Don touched countless people with his passion, talent, and desire for making the world a better place. He was born on October 30, 1947 in Connecticut and grew up in Prince George’s County, MD. Don graduated from St. John’s College High School in Washington, D.C. He received a BA in English from the University of Maryland in College Park. He was a very active member of Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity and an active alumnus. Don earned a Master’s Degree from Trinity College and continued with more post-grad work. He began his forty plus years as an educator in Prince George’s County. He retired from Eleanor Roosevelt High School in Greenbelt, MD. While at E.R.H.S. he taught English, was the school’s Athletic Director, and coached numerous varsity sports. He was also an assistant varsity boys’ basketball coach at DeMatha High School in Hyattsville where he assisted in the achievement of the North American and National H.S. Varsity Boys’ Basketball Championship. After leaving Eleanor Roosevelt H. S., he taught several years at St. Vincent Pallotti H. S. in Laurel. Recently, Don spent the last several years as a Professor of English, teaching in the Professional Writing Program at the University of Maryland. Don was a great lover of life, pursuing many interests. He was an active musician who also wrote song lyrics and poetry. He excelled at golf, winning many golf awards. Theater, film, boating, and travel were other avid pursuits. For several years he was the President of the Robert Burns Society of Annapolis and was an active member of the North American Robert Burns Association, traveling as a representative to Scotland and various locations in the U.S. and in Canada. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Don’s memory to Bello Machre (a non-profit that works with people with developmental disabilities), 7765 Freetown Road, Glen Burnie, MD 21060. The family of Donald McGlew will receive guests on Tuesday, June 12 from 10 a.m. until a Mass of Christian Burial begins at 11 a.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church, 826 W. Central Avenue, Davidsonville, MD. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Cemetery in Annapolis, MD.
