orothy Dixon Dickinson, 89, an 8-year resident of Annapolis, MD and previously of Wyckoff, NJ for over 47 years died on December 9, 2009 at Ginger Cove Health Center of heart failure after a 5 month illness.
Born January 5, 1920 in Brooklyn, NY, she graduated from Bishop McDonnell High School in Brooklyn, NY and attended the Traphagen School of Design in New York City, NY, where she studied art and fashion. Dorothy was employed as a fashion model in New York with the John Robert Powers Agency. Mrs. Dickinson met her husband while starring in a fashion show at the 1939 New York World's Fair at the Kodak pavilion. During WWII, she was an Army wife and was posted in Fishers Island, NY, Virginia Beach, VA, and Key West, Florida, where she survived a major hurricane. She volunteered for many years in New Jersey making Braille books for the blind and after moving to Maryland she volunteered to staff the in-house store at Ginger Cove and also helped with flower arrangements for the complex. Dorothy was an accomplished watercolor artist and loved gardening.
She was the devoted wife of the late Robert Earl Dickinson, whom she married in 1942 and who died in 2001; mother of Jean Mansur of Raritan Township, NJ, Carol Dickinson of Westminster, MD and Elaine Dickinson of Davidsonville, MD; cousin of Louise Ebbets of Warrenton, VA. She is also survived by 2 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
