Dorothy J. Rochlin - Obituary

orothy J. Rochlin lived in the Washington area since 1940. She attended Notre Dame Academy and received a degree in Interior Design at the Abbott School of Fine Arts and was employed By Lansburgh’s 1949-1963. Some of her work included “Hillwood” – The Merriweather Post Home, The Chinese Embassy, auditoriums, churches, a retirement home, homes of senators and congressmen and as well as many fine homes and apartments. She was Social Director for six years at the Grosvenor Park Apartments, where she lived for 37 years. She enjoyed volunteer work at JCC (Jewish Community Center) where she taught mosaic tiles for 5 years. She returned to work in 1975 at David Taylor Naval Ship R&D Center located in Carderock, Md. starting in payroll and by taking courses thru the government in accounting and budgeting, she applied in moving up the scale in various accounting positions – while receiving many awards for her work. During her last six years, she prepared their “financial statements” reporting these to the pentagon in a 29-page book. She retired in 1989. Having moved to Riderwood Village in 2003 – a retirement community in Silver Spring, Md. she established a “reading group”, in which she read to those who were not able to read, did personal shopping for other residents, taught some residents multiple games, member of the bell choir, worked in the convenience store on the 1st floor of Riderwood and other volunteer work at Riderwood. Several months after her arrival there, she was made President of the Resident Council, representing 95 residents assisting them to voice their individual needs and feelings. She enjoyed doing acrylic painting and tissue collage, playing the piano, reading, a variety of puzzles and games, playing pinochle and listening to music. She passed away Monday, November 23, 2020 in Annapolis, Md where she was preceded in death by her husband Stanley Rochlin (married 24 years) and Thomas Shapiro (together 20 years). She is survived by her family of 2 nieces – Anita Smith (husband Randy) and Lynn Moser (husband Jim); 6 nephews – David Jablonski (wife Marsha), Paul Jablonski (wife Rosaria), Mark Jablonski (wife Mary Frances), Edwin Jablonski (wife Silvia), Richard Jablonski, Peter Jablonski (wife Francine); 16 great nieces and nephews and 11 great – great nieces and nephews.
