Dorothy Sheckells - Obituary

orothy Mae Johnson Sheckells, 83, died on July 12, 2010 at the Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis, MD after a battle with ovarian cancer. Born on September 13, 1926 in Tracy's Landing, MD to the late Viola and James Johnson, she was the youngest of three children. In 1944, Dorothy married the late James Allen Sheckells, Jr. of Huntingtown, MD. In 1974 she married the late Richard (Dick)Leisner and remarried the late James Sheckells in 2004. In 1961, she became Postmaster of Tracys Landing Post Office until she retired in 1986. During her retirement she enjoyed boating, fishing, gardening and reading a good novel. Dorothy was preceded in death by her son, James Johnson Sheckells and her sister, Louise Turner Kiefer. She is survived by her sister, Ethel Parks; her son and his wife, Donald and Margaret Sheckells; daughter and husband Joyce and Gordon “Butch” Phipps and daughter, Martha Sheckells; her grandchildren, Christine Sheckells Parker, Cindy and Brian Sheckells, Angela Phipps Sutherland, Alicia Phipps Santoiemma, Michael Stallings and Krystal Sheckells; and ten great grandchildren, Jacob Sutherland, Taylor Smith, Antonio Santoiemma, Aaron and Adam Mulvin, Cole Parker, Kaitlyn, Kori, Joseph and Keeli Sheckells. Friends are invited to Dorothy's Life Celebration at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Rd., Edgewater, MD on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9pm. Funeral service will be held on Saturday, July 17 at 11:00am at St. James Church, 5757 Solomons Island Rd., Lothian, MD. Interment church cemetery.
