ouglas I. Guy, 75, of Annapolis, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 17, 2018 at Anne Arundel Medical Center after a short illness. Doug's life started humbly, being born on May 17, 1942 to the late Dorothy Elizabeth Broggin and Leslie Frederick Guy at home on a small farm in Addison, VT. He was born "en caul," and it was foretold he would live a lucky life. Luck did not manifest itself obviously, as his father was struck with polio and paralyzed when Doug was eight years old, and it was up to the young boy, his older sister, foster brother, and mother to run the farm. Doug persevered through his childhood and enlisted in the U.S. Navy upon graduating from high school. Once honorably discharged, he was working as an OR tech at the Mary Fletcher Hospital in Burlington, VT, when he met a pretty young nursing student named Judy and was dared to ask her out on a date. Dating Judy inspired him to enroll in the University of Vermont and receive his BA in Psychology. After he married Judy in 1968, they moved to Philadelphia where he received his Masters in Business Administration at Temple University. Doug developed a successful career as a hospital administrator at top hospitals in Philadelphia, Milwaukee, WI, Oconomowoc, WI, and Berlin, WI. But Doug's true pride was in his family, even if he was outnumbered by his three daughters, Jenn, Rachel and Meg. Although his job was demanding and he often had to commute an hour each way to work every day, he never missed a band concert, basketball game or dance recital and was always available to coach a softball team. He would always volunteer to serve as a steadfast copilot with any of his daughters as they zigzagged across the country with their belongings in their car, chasing a new life. When he finally retired in 2011, he and Judy moved to Annapolis to be close to friends and family. He enjoyed singing in the choir at St. Anne's Parish, playing his beloved bagpipes in the Chesapeake Caledonian Pipes and Drums, golfing and fishing with his daughters and grandchildren. Doug was a gentle soul - always kind to animals and helping friends and strangers alike. His quiet wisdom, humor, and kindness will be deeply missed by his family and friends. Doug is survived by his wife of 49 years, Judith Guy (nee Myers); his foster brother, Edward Warner; his daughters, Jennifer (Nicholas) Aumiller of Columbia, MD, Rachel Guy of Brunswick, GA, and Margaret (David) Tran of Columbia, MD and his four grandchildren, Nicholas Aumiller V, Eleanor Aumiller, Douglas "Dougie" Tran and Colin Tran. He was preceded in death by his sister, Sandra Joy. Friends are invited to celebrate Douglas' life at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Rd., Edgewater, MD on Thursday, January 25 from 4 to 7 PM. Funeral service will be held at St. Anne's Episcopal Church, Church Circle, Annapolis, MD on Friday, January 26 at 11 AM. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Anne’s Parish, 199 Duke of Gloucester St., Annapolis, MD 21401.
