D

ouglas L. Hurley, 76, a resident of Catonsville, died on Sunday, January 9, at the Mandrin Chesapeake Hospice House in Harwood following a year-long battle with esophageal cancer. Doug was born on April 26, 1934 in Washington, DC to the late Ray and Clara Hurley. He graduated from Bladensburg High School and the Capitol Engineering Institute in Washington, DC. Doug served in the U.S. Navy as an E-4 electronics technician and was stationed aboard the U.S.S. Saratoga and the U.S.S. Leyte. He worked for Northrop Grumman as a radar technician for 38 years, developing aircraft guidance systems for the U.S. military, until his retirement in 2000. Doug was a proud and dedicated Red Cross Blood Donor, an avid fan of all sports and a world traveler who participated in many tour groups. He also enjoyed raising dahlias and sharing them with his friends. Doug is survived by his close friend, Erma Burkowske of Glen Burnie and three sisters, Patricia A. Strieter of Annapolis, MD, Linda R. Constantine of Olney, MD and Carol S. Manga of Salt lake City, UT. Friends are invited to Doug’s Life Celebration on Friday, January 14, from 12 noon until 2:00 p.m. at the GEORGE P. KALAS FUNERAL HOME, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater, MD 21037. A graveside service will follow at 2:30 p.m. at Lakemont Memorial Gardens in Davidsonville, MD. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Disabled American Veterans, Salvation Army or the charity of your choice.
