D

ouglas Warren Thiessen, 35, of West River, died Jan. 9 of a ski accident. Mr. Thiessen was born July 8, 1973 in Chicago, Ill. to Arthur and Patricia Thiessen of Oak Lawn, Ill. He graduated in 1995 from Washington and Lee University with a BA in Politics and Sociology. In 1998 he received his law degree from the Wake Forest School of Law. The U.S. Justice Department employed him for over ten years. He taught Sunday school and led several children's ministries. He also taught home schooled teens in a local co-op and coached soccer and baseball for the Recreational Youth Athletic League (RYAL) in Annapolis. He was a member of the Maryland and D.C. Bar associations and several federal circuit courts. He also served in many community positions including his recent appointment as the General Counsel to the Maryland Republican Party. He served as a Ruling Elder at Grace Evangelical Presbyterian Church in Davidsonville. He enjoyed science fiction and the outdoors including camping, hiking, skiing, fishing and crabbing with his family as well as vacationing at the beach, Disney World and in the mountains. He was a loving family man who prepared meals and played baseball, guitar and mandolin with his son. Survivors include his wife of 13 years, Sarah Thiessen; one son, Taylor Thiessen; three daughters, Hannah, Heidi, Charlotte and Clara Thiessen; one brother, Eric Thiessen of Abingdon, Va. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 13 at 2 p.m. at the Annapolis Evangelical Presbyterian Church, 710 Ridgely Avenue.
